This
spring, Pied Piper Players presents TOM SAWYER…an American Musical based
on the classic novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
Mark
Twain's story comes to exuberant musical life in this adaptation of America's
favorite book. Tom Sawyer is the
irresistible story of a young boy growing up in the heartland of America.
The story is set around 1840
in St. Petersburg, Missouri, a bustling town on the banks of the Mississippi
River. Tom matches wits with his
stern Aunt Polly, falls in love with the beautiful, feisty Becky Thatcher, and
goes on the adventure of his life with Becky and that irresistible Huckleberry
Finn. Along the way we meet a terrifying
villain named Injun Joe, Tom's bratty half-brother Sid, and all the children
in the village - providing one scene-stealing role after another.
As
this fun-filled musical unfolds, we share with Tom and his friends all of the
rollicking and heart-stopping adventures found in Twain's masterpiece, whether
it's Tom tricking his friends into white-washing the fence, crossing swords
with Schoolmaster Dobbins in school, playing pirates on Jackson’s Island or
getting lost in McDougal's Cave, TOM SAWYER…an American Musical is a
tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family.
Artistic Director's Notes The road to Tom Sawyer…An American Musical has not been an easy one. It required a great amount of time, dedication and rallying of volunteer spirit to arrive where it is today. This is not my first trip down the road with Tom Sawyer, nor do I imagine it will be my last. Tom is a mischief maker with a heart of gold. There is an endearing and enduring quality about his nature and those of the people in St. Petersburg, Missouri that inspires and comforts me. It is in their spirit of community that I find peace. Community, as it was in the time of Tom Sawyer and as I knew it growing up*, is all but lost in the modern world. Knowing your neighbors, watching out for, taking care of and respecting each other, protecting children, helping elders, a sense of safety and togetherness has vanished from many territorial limits. Thankfully, we have organizations to join that might fulfill our call to be a member of a community. Pied Piper Players is a community which continues to strengthen. Amongst our Board, staff, volunteers, donors, and actors we have our share of mischief makers, each with a heart larger than themselves who work to contribute to a greater good. It is through these community members’ efforts that Pied Piper Players, Inc. is able to provide low-cost, entertaining family theater. Their rally around allows us to continue our partnership with the Daly City Peninsula Partnership Collaborative, with whom we provide free, after-school arts enrichment programs in Daly City and South San Francisco. It is our aim to provide an environment which cultivates a culture of community mindedness and give-back spirit!! We thank you for joining us to harken back to the carefree, fancy-footed days of the St. Petersburg community and invite you to find out more about Pied Piper Players and how to become a member of our community. -- Leslie A.
