Final Just So What - 11/22/08

Hi all -
Have you missed my emails? I just wanted to follow-up on a few items.

(1)

(2) On a lighter note, please complete the attached Just So parent and cast survey. The surveys were available at the cast party but a few people mentioned that they would rather fill them out electronically. Now is your chance!
You can email me the completed surveys; mail them to me (1217 Cabrillo Ave., Burlingame 94010); or mail directly to PPP, P.O. Box 1996, Burlingame, CA 94011-1996. Thank you for your feed back.

(3) Bruce Croft has downloaded many beautiful pictures to our website from the Just So performance and tech week - check them out! Also, you can view David Dong's pictures from the performance at
dwdong.smugmug.com.

(4) Also, I have attached a reimbursement form to this email. Please, submit these requests as soon as possible.

Thank you for all your help!
Wendi

 Just So What #11 - 10/29/08

Hi everyone -
What can I say… It is 9 days before opening night, and EVERYONE needs to be congratulated and thanked for your role in putting this show together. If there are cast members reading this, please go and thank your parents and other family members who have contributed tirelessly to this production. Each committee is working so hard and has accomplished so much already! Of course, there is still more to do, so we are expecting another productive weekend.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

(1) Greenhouse Gang escapes to the Theatre!

Movin' on up, to the East side, to a deluxe...Well it is true we are moving from the West side of 101 in South San Francisco to the East Side of 101 in San Mateo. That is right, it is time to take all of the fantastic creations from the Greenhouse and move them to the theatre. We are very lucky this year to be able to move into the theatre early and have an entire weekend to set up. So, here is schedule for the week/weekend as it pertains to moving and the Theatre construction work over the weekend.

Thursday Night - I am picking up a 24' truck from San Mateo Rentals at 4:30 and driving over to the Greenhouse to begin to unload. Nothing to do on the way home? Well come on over to the Greenhouse, bring your gloves and help fill that truck. This involves some heavy lifting - looking for about four people to help. I will then leave the truck overnight and I will need a ride back to my place. Meet at the Greenhouse!!!

Friday Morning - 9:15 (or 10:00) Meet at the Theatre!!! Still getting straight on exact time. I will get clarity on this soon. So on Friday Morning we unload the truck that we packed the night before. If we need another trip to the greenhouse with the truck we will do it immediately at that time.

Friday Theatre from 10:00 to 3:00 We will be working in the theatre after the move. This involves putting together the drops, and general theatre set-up Looking for three folks to handle this task. Theatre!!!

Saturday 10-2 and 2-6, and 6-9: Big day. From 10-6 looking for three or four folks for more theatre set-up, last minute painting, help with weighting the drops, etc. From 6-9 at night we need one or two folks to help out the lighting crew get the lights set-up. Theatre!!!

Sunday: This is the first crew day. Those of you doing crew should be prepared to be at the theatre 1 hour before the actors are at the theatre.

I am available by cell or home phone for questions. Please notify me if you are coming to these events. Cell - 415-269-5617 home - 650-348-5001

Lets go Greenhouse and Crew. Lets show them "How We Roll" Mark Ragsdale

(2) Publicity

Hey...Ho...Hey...Ho...Sorry, just some elephant talk there to get your attention! You, Publicity Team, are fabulous! There are posters everywhere! However, we can always do more. Ask yourself this...did you put any up posters today? Did you mention the show to everyone you bumped into at Starbucks or dance class? Did you send an e-mail to everyone in your child's old playgroup? Have you notified your Mother's Club, Book Club, yahoo group? Remember, people will love this show. Do them a favor and let them know about it!

Here is a list of the school newsletters the show is mentioned in: Nueva, North Hillsborough, Park School,Highlands, Central Middle, Brittan Acres, Wornick, Borel,
Burlingame High School. If your school is not on this list, please request that a blurb be posted if you have not already done so. We have also been mentioned in the Peninsula Girls Chorus and Peninsula Temple Sholom Preschool newsletters. Again, if you are a member of a church or temple or any other organization with a newsletter in hard copy or electronic form, please see if they will post the blurb. If you have posted the blurb elsewhere, or need to be e-mailed the wording of the blurb (again, feel free to personalize it as you see fit), please let Kim Gelman (kgelman@cashin.com) know as she is keeping track of your fantastic efforts. This is a wonderful show for families to see together and once soccer season is over, people need something to do! SELL OUT!! SELL OUT!! SELL OUT!!

3. Tickets

Please bring your ticket orders this weekend. You can print an order form online or pick one up Saturday at the Baywood LGI. Remember to put the information into your school communications about tickets, the website address www.piedpiperplayers.org and that the show opens next week. We are hoping to increase our tickets orders this week and need your help to get communications out there. Invite your friends, neighbors, schoolmates, relatives etc. All order forms should go to Joanna Privitera (Mrs. Rhino) or Carol Phillips. SELL, SELL,SELL - We need your help.

6. Hall of Fame

Also, please mark your calendar for a special celebration to honor the newest members of the Pied Piper Player Hall of Fame (cast/staff member who have done 5 Pied Piper Players mainstage shows). There will be a short presentation followed by cake and fun! Families encouraged to attend.

Saturday, November 1st from 5:30-6:15
Location: Bayside Theater

7. Props

Does any one have a life preserver (the solid round ones)? If so, contact Christa Shaffer - ChristaShaffer@comcast.net.

8. Costumes

All actors will start the show wearing black jazz shoes...but by the end of the show when the animals "diversify" the cast can change shoes to a colored shoe (ie a bright colored converse, etc). All colored shoes need to be run by Susan to see if they fit with character. This not required - it is just a way to help make the animals distinct.

9. House Duties

As you all know, we are a small cast so it is important that everyone sign up as soon as possible for their House Duties shifts. Thank you for your help ! Here is the link - (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=ptMyfphsVh3GhL_PgL0pucQ ).

1. UPDATE FROM PUBLICITY

JUST SO Halloween...Isn't Halloween Just So much fun? Don't you get Just So many kids at your door, seeking candy, tricks, and, perhaps, information about a Just So fabulous show to see the following two weekends?! Here's an idea (straight from the DingoDog's mama!)...if you are one of those families that lives in the flats and gets tons of kids trucked in to partake of your awesome candy...put up a big Just So sign on your front door -- right where the little ones, and their parents, can see it! Have some business cards or postcards handy to pass out to people who seem like they are thinking about ordering tickets. You can even print out some fliers if you want to go crazy and pass out fliers to the little ones (or even on the soccer field)! Thanks! P.S. SELL OUT SELL OUT SELL OUT!! P.P.S. If we sell out at least one performance, I will give the cast an ice cream party. Seriously. Tell the kids!!! -- Leslie Ragsdale, Publicity Chair

2. SCHOOL SHOW - We would like to sell out this show! -Seats are still available!
- please check with your teacher about this wonderful opportunity
- questions? contact Joanne Spetz - jojospetz@hotmail.com

3. PARENT MEETING - this Sunday, October 26 at 2:00
- tech week expectations and explanations will be discussed
- at the meeting you can sign up for show hours

4. RAFFLE
- please turn in any raffle donations
- program recognition for donor deadline Friday, 10/24...but you can still gather more prizes and the donor will be posted in the lobby.

5. UPDATE FROM COSTUMES

Here are some important updates...

Shoes: All Cast Members should have their show shoes and should be rehearsing in them.
The sets have stairs and steps; we need everyone comfortable in their feet, hooves and paws as well.
It is a good idea to bring them to rehearsal and change there from street shoes.

Makeup: Will be base foundation + eyeliner + cheek + lip color.
(Powder helps set the makeup, but is not critical.)
Nothing too bright at first, then more color may be added during intermission, then even more towards the finale.
(There will be folks around the greenroom to help with makeup application and answer questions when we begin dress rehearsals.)
The concept is the creatures all begin the story looking alike, then develop their own identity as the show progresses.
,
Please, please, please DO NOT share makeup. Please.

Hair: Some characters will need to put their hair in multiple pig-tails, indicating ears (2), or mane (several down the middle).
Please feel free to experiment and get creative with styles and shapes.

Costumes: Along those creative lines, if anyone has any COLORFUL "bits and pieces" they might
lend or share, that can be added to base costumes, please bring them by this weekend.
Things like hair accessories, gloves, glasses, hats, scarves, headbands, claws, boas,
gauntlets/fingerless gloves, bold-patterned socks, leg-warmers, arm-warmers,
stripes, polka dots, zig-zags, scrunchies, bows, hair extensions, belts, earrings . . . please bring it by.
All colors from browns/tans to magenta and mustard, orange, pink and lime green, etc.

Anyone have two big B-B-Q mitts we could borrow?

Anyone have a red "onesie" or red overalls or red 2-piece something (crab-like) in a size 6-8?

The 3 cats: You all have black pants you could bring in?

Spice Rack: We'd like you all to "fit" your hat for elastic chin band - then take home with you this weekend.
Please handle your hat with care. Please.

Rhinos: We need a tight gray t-shirt for Mrs. and a tight and a huge for Mr.
Anyone have any gray long-sleeve t-shirts hanging around?

Wildebeests: Any orange t-shirts?

Greenhouse: Anyone able to bring the orange t-shirts down from the greenhouse?
I believe there are at least 3 sitting out in a stack of tees. On the left, in the back.

Also, there are a couple of round-lens glasses in a box...one clear, one green.
And bandanas . . . there are red, orange and a couple misc. colors in a clear box.
Final greenhouse request, bag of fingerless gloves, black.

IMPORTANT: We will begin distributing costume pieces, slowly but surely.
Once you have a costume piece, it is your responsibility as an actor, to make certain it is:
1) labeled with your name.
2) placed in your basket (a small plastic tub or basket LABELED with your name) OR hung on a hanger.
3) functioning properly. If there are any button/elastic/size/hem issues, please ask for help.
4) there will be lots of little pieces . . . PLEASE keep track; make sure you have everything accounted for before arriving to and upon leaving the theater. No one else should need to pick up/hang up/fold/organize your costumes and makeup. Just you. So there you have it.

Thank you all from,
the Costume Gals

1. PUBLICITY WORKDAY - TOMORROW
Attention Publicity Team (yes, you!! and your kids too!!): Just a friendly reminder that Publicity Day is this Saturday, October 18th. Swing by Baywood any time between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (when most of you drop off your cast members OR earlier to get them to help you). You can work as a team with another parent, or your kids, and make a fun morning or afternoon of it. We will have sign-ups for particular areas and businesses so we can avoid overlap. Hand out the business cards to your friends, relatives, hair dresser, people in line at Mollie Stones and Orchard Supply that you strike up conversations with... If your child has some free time in between rehearsals this weekend, take him or her along...what store owner can resist giving you permission to post our lovely poster with your adorable Just So cast member smiling that million dollar smile? See you this weekend. Remember to bring tape!!

 Just So What #7 - 10/02/08

Hi all -
Baywood is having a festival this weekend so our rehearsals have been moved. Saturday's rehearsal will be in the LGI at Highlands Elementary School (2320 Newport Street, San Mateo, CA 94402 - it is right off Bunker Hill). The location for Sunday's rehearsal will be split between Borel and Miss Terri's and some times have been slightly modified - see below.

I will be out of town from this Saturday, 10/5 through Monday, 10/13...and Wendy Sims has agreed to help. Her contact information is wendysims@comcast.net or 650/218-4995. I should be able to receive emails during that time.

There are some important dates and notes this week - so get your calendars out!

Thank you for your help!
Wendi

1. From the Publicity Committee -

SELL OUT!! SELL OUT!! SELL OUT!!!
Well, my kids seem to think that if they chant things over and over again that I am more likely to comply with their wishes! Just in case they are right, I wanted to ask all the cast families to make it a goal to sell out at least one performance of our sure-to-be-JUST-SO-fabulous show. With that goal in mind, EVERY cast family is required to work on Saturday, October 18th at Publicity Day. You will be given posters to put up around town in key locations (seeking permission from a manager/owner/principal/secretary first, of course) and postcards and business cards to hand out to everyone you know!

Also, you are going to be contacted soon by the Publicity Committee to put a blurb in the newsletters of your schools, churches, choruses, etc. advertising the show. Please follow through with your requests for blurb placement as those blurbs are a great way to get the word out to a wider audience.

Lastly, please send out an e-mail to everyone on your personal e-mail list who may be interested in the show. A sample e-mail would read:

Come see [my child/ren] in Pied Piper Players' fall production: Just So. Based on Rudyard Kipling's Just So tales for children (how did the elephant get its trunk, etc. remember those?!), the show features a cast ranging from age 5 to adult, a professional orchestra, fabuolously fun choreography and eye-catching sets and costumes. [my child/ren] plays the part of [ ] and has been having a blast learning the toe-tapping tunes in this kid-friendly musical. The show runs from November 7-16th on weekends at the Bayside Performing Arts Center in San Mateo. For more details, or ticket information, please contact me, visit www.piedpiperplayers.org or call 992-PIED (9433).

Please make the e-mail as personal as you would like -- the important thing is to get it out there so people get the dates on their calendars! Thanks!!!! If you have any questions, just let me know! -- Leslie Ragsdale (Publicity Chair), leslieragsdale@att.net

2. Greenhouse update - Mark Ragsdale will send out information under separate cover. Please contact him with any questions - mark.ragsdale@pnc.com.

3. Costumes update - the Just Sew committee
Cast members should plan to wear a black jazz shoe for the performance (NOT a sneaker). You can get the shoes from Capezio in San Mateo. If you tell Capezio's that you are part of the Just So cast then you will get a 15% discount. Please try to go as soon as possible to get your shoes!

Costumes is looking for a few items so check through your closets -
- Does anyone have access to chef coats and/or chef hats for the Parsee Baker and the Stove?
- Any funky yellow clothing for the Dingo Dog?
- OR any funky, stylized or exaggerated clothing.

Please contact Susan Melanson with questions - mskj@msn.com

4. Head Shots are Saturday, October 11th

- Headshots will be taken during the ALL CAST rehearsal
- this picture is displayed in the lobby
- please wear an all black shirt (no logo on it)
- no tank tops!

5. Cast Bios are DUE Saturday, October 4th

WHAT IS A CAST BIO?
A cast bio is a short paragraph about each cast member. It is written in the third person. It usually includes name, age, current role, performance history and personal information.

Example: John Rodriguez is 10 years old and plays the part of Schoolboy Sam. This is his third time on stage. Previous productions include Peter Pan (Lost Boy) and Oliver! (member of Fagin's gang). John is in 5th grade at Sunny Brook Farms Elementary School. When he is not on stage he enjoys playing the trumpet, reading science fiction, and riding his skateboard. John thanks his parents and family for their support during this production.

WHY DO YOU WANT IT?
Your cast bio will be attached to your head shot photo. They will be displayed in the theater lobby during the performances for the audience to read and enjoy.

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY BIO?
Please e-mail your bio to bios@piedpiperplayers.org

3. Advertisments/ Kudos - just a reminder!
Our Playbill team has begun soliciting and creating ads for the JUST SO playbill. We cover the printing cost by selling advertisements to local businesses, friends and family members. Attached is the Ad Form. Please consider placing an ad, and/or asking someone you know to place an ad. This is a GREAT way to honor and congratulate a cast member. Normally, we charge a fee to design an ad, BUT IF YOU PURCHASE AN AD BY SEPT 26th, Susan Melanson, our talented graphic artist will design your ad for free!!! (What a deal!) Questions, contact Wendy Sims (wendysims@comcast). Also in the Playbill are 1-line messages called Kudos. Each cast member receives 2 "free" kudos. Additional kudos are $4.00 each. Cast members and their families can place Kudos for other cast members, staff, friends/family coming to the show, etc. It is a fun and unique way to personalize the playbill for every participant and a great way to say "Thanks!" or "Good job" to someone special. Email your kudos to playbill@piedpiperplayer.org. Print a copy of your email along with payment and give to Wendy Sims no later than Oct 5. Attached is the kudos form. Kudos may be no more than 55 characters in length (including spaces!). Each kudo must fit in one line, you cannot combine them. They may also include any of these characters: Thumbs Up; Heart; Happy Face; Two Eighth Notes; One Eighth Note; Star. You may email the attached form or just type your kudos into your email and send to playbill@piedpiperplayers.org.

5. Bios- are due October 4th

WHAT IS A CAST BIO?
A cast bio is a short paragraph about each cast member. It is written in the third person. It usually includes name, age, current role, performance history and personal information. Example:
John Rodriguez is 10 years old and plays the part of Schoolboy Sam.

Please e-mail your bio to bios @ piedpiperplayers.org
